So someone told me their ex girlfriend had trouble with this math problem:

On which is greater than the other.

depends on what m is. if m is an integer, m^2/2 > (m/2)^2 as (m/2)^2 = (m^2)/4. If m is a fraction, m/4 might be bigger.

It's the first one but you're saying this could go either way?

I'm saying (m^2)/4 might be bigger for rational numbers but the answer isn't immediately hitting me and I'm too tired to investigate it right now. I'm just stating another possibility.

nah it'll wind up being okay for rationals. so yeah, (m^2)/2 is bigger

Not that that math problem was my reason for making this thread, that's just what came to mind. :p

If I stick with my current course at uni I'll have to do a maths unit next semester. I'm sure that I'll be around here asking CGhost for help.

I have no idea what the fuck the answer to that is. I've forgotten most of what I learned in math during middle/high school. I used to love math back in 1st grade or so, but then it got to be so complex and hard, and I just couldn't stand it.

It didn't get complex, it was probably just taught to you really poorly.

Maybe it was taught to me poorly. I remember having algebra introduced to me as early as in 7th grade, but I never understood back then that you didn't solve problems from left to right. No one really took the time to explain to me about PEMDAS and how it worked, and when I would do problems from left to right, I would be marked wrong, but no one seemed to be patient enough to work with me

I remember one time I didn't do my homework, and I had detention during PE (they had detention during PE instead of lunch for whatever reason), and the teacher's assistant literally just wrote the answers to all the questions on the board, and told us to copy them down. When they were all copied down, we could be let out to PE. Everyone left after the first five minutes except me, because I wanted to try and actually learn it, but when I asked how to do the work, the TA yelled at me.


It was stupid

High school maths was taught really poorly at my school. Our maths faculty was mainly made up of poor English speaking immigrants who had a hard time trying to communicate and they kept leaving and being replaced so we feel behind in our course work. I gave up trying after one of the few good English speaking teachers who was taking my class left.

....English speaking immigrants? Isn't english the official language of Aussietralia?

Maybe he means they are immigrants who speak English poorly.

I don't think anybody speaks poorer english than the australians
