Signs of Weakness

People's ideas of what things are signs of weakness vary. These are the only ones I can come up with right now, but you can add to them..... but of these, do you feel that they are signs of weakness?

A) self-medication (drugs/alcohol)
B) seeking outside help (psychiatrist/psychologist/counselor)
C) denial (i.e.--ignoring a problem)
D) expressing emotion (crying/yelling)

My answer:
A) yes
B) no
C) yes--if it is a continuous reaction
D) no

Lots of people do drugs or drink because it's fun... not because they are weak.

If you can't fix your own problems when it is something dealing with yourself or your emotions, yes, you are weak. Learn to help your self and stop looking to others to fix things for you.

Denial isn't necessarily ignoring a problem. Looking over a problem is no big deal if the problem isn't a big deal. Denial is more not being able to come to terms with something which is weakness.

Showing emotion can be weakness. It depends on the situation.

I'd also add that turning to God or religion in times of need or for answers is weakness. There is no problem with believing that a God exists but while you are here on Earth you are on your own. God isn't going to intervene or help you, you've got to help yourself.

I agree and disagree with you on that one Lox. Yes, some people turn to God and religion too much and they themselves don't try and assist themselves in helping their own situation. But turning to religion and God can at times help. Tales from the bible aided me greatly when i was at a crossroad in my life, sure the path i chose led to suffering but i came out of it all good and i'm a better person after it.

But did you do it on your own? Did you make through it on your own or did you decide to put it all in God's hands and take whatever happens? There is a difference.

I meant that ignoring a problem could be a form of denial. And, as I said, it's not always a bad thing--but if it is a constand reaction to every single problem someone has, then I think it is weakness.

Most religious people would say that you shouldn't just "turn to God/relgion" in times of need or when you want answers... The point of most religions is for it to be an integral part of your life... when things are great, good, mediocre, bad, awful, etc.. I agree that if someone is expecting the hand of God to pick him up and dust him off, he's kidding himself....

We've had these long discussions about the religion thing so you know what I'm talking about when I say that.

Yes, i know... but there are people who follow a religion because they are supposed or it makes them look good, and then there are those that are genuine. unfortunately, the former is a huge majority.
