3 hours of sleep last night. Driving out of town for a show that starts at 9pm. Test tomorrow at 8am. Leaving during Nachtmystium. Probably falling asleep and dying on drive home.
I might stay. I hate to leaving during or before a band plays. I just have that test tomorrow morning and they're probably not going on until after 12. I'm not a big fan of their music, although, I'm not a fan of Zoroaster's recorded music but they're great live. Zoroaster is playing before Nachtmystium tonight, too. But my point being, I could very well enjoy them.

So... getting to the show sucked.
Dark Castle was pretty awesome as usual. They played more new songs. And well, my Dark Castle experience I'll talk about later.
Zoroaster... I don't know. I suppose they were on point with their performance, I just wasn't feeling it so much last night. I guess I was just so tired already and, while loud, they're really mellow.
A few people talked to me about Nachtmystium before they went on. And Rob from Dark Castle told me he thought I would like their show. And really, that was Nachtmystium's show. Those guys are crazy good musicians. They're extremely tight and, even though I haven't heard much of their stuff, I'd swear it was album quality. Their music was also very well suited to a live performance. I didn't know any of the words, but the vocals were placed so well that I wished I could scream along with them. Best performance of the night, and one of the best bands I've seen live. It makes me really want to get into their music. I would definitely see those guys again.
Anyway, about Dark Castle. They're some of the most awesome people I've ever met. Before the show, Rob came up to me and asked how I've been. Then when I was inside sitting at the bar, Stevie came up and told me that Rob asked her if she'd seen me. So she came up to say hello and ask how I've been. And then periodically through the night they'd come stand or sit with me and have conversations. A lot of my time last night was spent talking to one or the both of them. They told me about their new album, it's title, their future projects away from Dark Castle, etc. It was cool. And I asked them if they were going to play "Flight Beyond" yet since they haven't played it live in years. Rob said he thought they should do it for me... so they went back stage and worked it up. Stevie came out and said that she'd been back there practicing just so she could play the song for me. Besides all that, I started talking to Rob about their merch and mentioned that one of the designs on a t-shirt I had washed off. He basically made me take another one from him, ha. Even though I told him I knew it wasn't their fault and they didn't have to. And after the show while I was talking to Stevie about Nachtmystium and various other stuff she just said "Can I give you anything?" And just kept telling me to take anything I wanted off their merch table. And again I told her she didn't have to but she insisted so I grabbed like the only t-shirt design from them I don't have. But yeah, Dark Castle are extremely cool. I love their music and them. It's always a pleasure just hanging out with them at shows.
And of interest to Ian, while I was leaving and saying goodbye to them... Rob told me he wanted to hear my bands' stuff and that I had to get him a copy. Stevie said so as well, but only when I mentioned it to her. Rob actually brought it up himself.
It went well, I suppose. I made a 92 barely looking over the chapters and made an 87 on the last test that I did study for.
I've been listening to Nachtmystium a bit since Monday. That was a good call on album quality. Most times when I see a band live without listening to their music, I can't make out a lot of the songs they play on their recorded stuff. But so far, I've been able to tell immediately which songs they played. Let's see...
No Funeral (this is one of my favorites that i've been listening to frequently) Ghost Of Grace Life of Fire One of These Nights (listening to the recorded track, it's odd that they closed with this one) Assassins Your True Enemy High On Hate (this is one of those that had great vocals for a live performance) Nightfall (I really enjoyed this one live) Then Fires (I think they played this one... I remember one track with really sludge-like riffs at points)
Those are probably the ones I'm fairly positive on... but that's still a great many songs I can recognize from never really hearing them before. And you've seen them live before I take it? It may have just been the way they did the sound that night... I couldn't really hear the kick drum, but I could just feel it rolling through my body. That was interesting. Anyway, it seems I've heard a lot of stuff from their most disliked album... but I thought it was all really good.
Yeah I saw them two years ago, opening for Wolves in the Throne Room. That was the best performance from Wolves I had ever seen (seen them five times total) and Nachtmystium's energetic and manic set made that show probably in my top 10 if not at least top 20 I've ever seen.
And their most hated, I'm not sure, it could be a toss-up between Assassins or Addicts. I haven't listened to Addicts yet, still kind of put off by their promo song they put out (forget what that one was called). But my first exposure to them was Assassins, and people definitely were hating on that hardcore when it first came out, but I really liked it. And I since did go through their back catalog, and I guess I can see the reason for the disparaging feelings towards it, as it is incredibly different, but I still think it unfair to dismiss the whole album and/or band like may did.

I finally listened to Addicts today straight through. It starts really strong but by the second half of it, I felt like I could have gone on to something else. I'm sure those other songs will grow on me. Then I'll get around to Assassins and work my way down further eventually.
Dark Castle again tomorrow night, this time with Rwake. That is going to be quite a nifty show.

Holy shit, those DC dudes are a fuckload of a lot cooler than I figured they'd be. I mean, I know you said they were pretty awesome, but I didn't think they were that awesome.
It's also totally fucking awesome that they were so interested in everything. When I get that Bloodgorge EP done (The material is coming in in about 2 weeks) then I'll send you like 10 copies to give some to them and the rest to do whatever you want with.

Was awesome.
Stevie came up and started talking to me about something after the first band... then the vocalist from Rwake came up and started talking to her. Afterwards, she offered to let me hear some of the new Dark Castle cd... So, I got to go sit in their van and listen to 3 songs from the new cd. She imparted some secrets about the recording... and... it was fucking awesome. She has told me previously that there was experimentation and I got to hear one of the industrial-ish tracks she talked about. She mentioned that she knew people were going to give them shit about how they were expanding... but it's still completely amazing. The 5 songs I've heard from the new one (it comes out in April, btw) are just so great. I cannot wait to get my hands on the cd.
Anyway... Dark Castle's set was amazing as usual. Probably the best performance by them I've seen so far. I helped set up their equipment and reload the van afterwards... and as such, I was just standing to the side of them while they played and that was quite lovely. Anyway, yeah... awesome performance as usual.
And Rwake was fucking killer. That is definitely a band people have to see live. They put on one hell of a performance and the two vocalists are very charismatic and energetic. They played 2 new songs, 2 or 3 older songs, "Leviticus", and "Crooked Rivers". Those last two especially pleased me. On the downside... someone got their ass kicked during Rwake's set... but I guess that's just what happens when you act like that.
I was also pulled into a picture by Stevie... I'll have to post that if I ever see it. It's Dark Castle, me, the male vocalist from Rwake, and one of their friends.

Damn, I need to start going to sludge/doom shows.
Details on the ass-kicking?
Definitely post that pic when possible.

I need to starting listening to sludge bands. I used to hate the genre for whatever reason but the other night I just felt like I should start getting into the genre.

Dark Castle sounds alright now that I'm giving them a go. I think I kinda liked that other band you mentioned ages ago. Bloody Panda or something like that. I don't think this is the kinda stuff I'd listen to heaps but I'd give it a spin every now and then.

Bloody Panda is doom. Dark Castle is... I dunno. Sometimes I'd say it's doom and sometimes it's sludge. They're really good, in any case. Might want to try Rwake.

I don't really know the difference between Doom and Sludge. Not until I start listening to both genres anyway.

They're not sludge, though.

Nobody going to watch the vid or comment on it? It's a really good song.
