Lookin' into buying a new laptop

what computer brands do y'all prefer?

any suggestions?

Toshiba is nice.

The only thing that matters with branding is customer support. Other than that, it just depends on how much money you want to spend really. A cheap Dell is going to be shitty in the same way a cheap Toshiba is going to be shitty. You pay for quality.

A Dell is always shittier than a Toshiba.

If you base your computer purchase on the logo on the back, you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm basing it on every Dell I've had or used was a piece of shit. And that every Toshiba was better in every way. HP and Dell computers would always crap out. Then my mom, brother, and I had Toshiba laptops... and never had a problem with them.

Yes that is true, Macs do cost more than everything.

They certainly are not better machines for the increased cost, though.


What John Kerr said is right, its all in what you spend. My work laptop is a $1200-1500 range Dell and it is awesome. I love it.

I'm also a big fan of Lenovo, those are very sturdy laptops if you're worried about them falling or anything like that.

My Mac only cost me $1100. Never had a problem with it.

I have a very expensive Dell and it has massive problems. It's frustrating.

I treat it very well. It just sucks. It runs slowly and something is wrong with the sound on it.

My toshiba isn't doing very well... I've had it 2.5 years now, though i admit it was the cheap option when I got it. we always had luck with Dell--though i've only had experience with dell desktops.

i'd considered a mac, but i can't fork out the money for the apple logo. i'd been looking at sony and asus so far. will definitely look into lenovo, as i do tend not to take the best care of my computers; sturdy is good.

What will you be doing on the machine?

Would you take it places? (i.e. post on here while you're takin a dump.)

mostly, i use a laptop to do homework, surf the internet, occasionally for netflix....

i do take it places, be it downstairs to the living room or to work with me.

If you're going to play any games on it that aren't browser based, this would make me look into getting a laptop that has a decent graphics card--depending on what you would be playing also.

I'm not sure what kind of homework you would be doing, but I'm assuming it would mainly be word processor driven with possible other programs that wouldn't take up much of the processor or am I wrong in assuming that?

Also, do you have a price range\budget?

i'm not much for playing games on my computer, other than an occasional java game (lol i don't even know if that's what you'd call them!) i don't want a crappy video card, but i'm not looking for high quality for gaming.

While this is a little higher than $800, it has a dedicated graphics card and a higher end processor.

It comes with 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HDD and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The site also states that it has ~4 hour battery life. I'm not sure how big you would want your screen, but this one is 15.6".

To be honest, I don't know as much about laptops as I do desktops, but I do know about specs and such of parts. That processor and graphics card look good to me, but I'm mainly going off of looking at the specs and looking at other peoples' reviews.
