i have a degree in psychology... so basically, the only option that wouldn't pay minimum wage is a government job......

so yeah, i'm qualified to flip burgers with my degree. got at least 2 more years before i have a half-way useful degree.

I got a job about 2 months ago, but I won't get my degree for about another 2 months from now. Things are a little bit different coming out of grad school, though.

I actually wasn't going to bother finishing the last requirements of getting my degree until I actually got a job. That's because there's always more research to be done on various projects in grad school, and so it's much better to be a not yet PhD keeping busy than an unemployed PhD doing nothing.

I'm starting grad work in August. Is it a lot different from undergrad? I'm kind of freaking out a little.

My degree will be in Astronomy. Same as Electroretard, actually, but he's getting his Bachelors in it still.

Grad school is very different than undergrad. I can only say from my experience, though, and what you should expect in grad school is heavily dependent on what your field is.

First thing's, first, though, you'll probably start out with a very heavy class load (undergrad x2 we'll say) and not have much time to do much of anything outside of that. After about the first year, the classes will start to become less of a focus and you'll start focusing on research more. Eventually, for many fields, you'll stop taking classes all together or very rarely. This usually happens the third year or so, and you'll almost focus completely on research until you finish a worthwhile thesis.

Also, it can depend, but you need funding of some sort while in school, and so that usually can come from 3 sources: being a teacher/grader for a course, being a research assistant for a faculty member, or getting your own fellowship/grant money through the university or some other organization.

What are you going to grad school again for? Also, going for a PhD or something else? If you're just going for a Masters, ignore half of what I just said, oops.

i'm doing a master's program right now but do plan to go for a PhD once I get my M.S.

It's a 2-year program where year 2 focuses mostly on thesis work, though my adviser wants to get started earlier than that. So, I'll do a thesis to get my M.S. .. then I'll have to do a dissertation for PhD

My fall semester has 11 hours (2 labs in there). I'm hoping to get an assistanceship. If any first-years get one, I should be one of their top 2 picks... but with budget cuts, the rumor is that assistanceships might be limited to 2nd-years only.
